Privacy Policy

Crafted Compass is an independent, non commercial website. It carries no advertising, no affiliate links and no sponsorship. We do not sell anything, and we do not build profiles of the people who read it. This page describes everything the site does that involves data, and it is deliberately specific rather than reassuring.

We are the data controller for this site. If you want anything on this page explained or acted on, email info@craftedcompass.co.uk.

Visit statistics

There are two, and they work differently. One needs your permission and one does not.

Google Analytics, only if you agree

The site can use Google Analytics 4 to understand which pages are worth writing more of.It does not load, and sends nothing, until you press Accept on the notice at the bottom of the screen. If you press Reject, the code is never fetched from Google at all, so Google is not told you visited.

If you do accept, each page view sends Google:

• the address and title of the page you are on, and the page you came from
• an approximate location, worked out from your IP address, usually to the town
• your browser, device type, screen size and language
• a randomly generated number stored in the two cookies listed in theCookie Policy, so a second visit is counted as a returning browser rather than a new one

It does not send your name, your email address, or anything you have typed into the contact form. Google states that Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses: it uses yours to work out the rough location and then discards it.

Where it goes. Google acts as our data processor, meaning it may only use this for us and not for its own purposes. For visitors in the UK and the EEA the contracting party is Google Ireland Limited, and the data may be processed on Google servers outside the UK, including in the United States, under the safeguards in Google's data processing terms. How long it is kept is a setting on the Analytics property; the default is two months and the longest available is fourteen.

The legal basis is your consent, and you can take it back at any time through the Cookie preferences link in the footer. Doing so deletes the cookies straight away and stops anything further being sent. There is no penalty for refusing: nothing on the site is withheld or degraded.

Cloudflare Web Analytics, always on

The site also counts page views with Cloudflare Web Analytics. It sets no cookies, does no fingerprinting and stores nothing on your device, so there is nothing for you to consent to and it runs whichever answer you give the banner. It tells us which pages are read and roughly how many people visit. It cannot tell us who you are, and there is no way for us to look you up in it.

The contact form

If you use the contact form, the name, email address, subject and message you type are sent to this site's own server function, which passes them to Web3Forms, a form delivery service, which emails them to a single inbox that we read.

Your message is used to reply to you and for nothing else. It is not added to a mailing list, shared with anyone, or used for marketing. It stays in that inbox until it is no longer needed, and if you ask us to delete it, we will. If you would rather not use the form, email info@craftedcompass.co.uk directly and it reaches the same place with one fewer service in the way.

The form is protected by Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks that a person rather than a script is sending it. It is designed not to follow you between websites and is not used to build a picture of you. It counts as strictly necessary, because the form fills with spam without it, so it is not covered by the consent banner.

Maps

Pub and event pages include a small map. The map images are loaded from OpenStreetMap, a non profit mapping project, and only once the map has scrolled into view or you have opened it. Your browser requests those images directly from OpenStreetMap, which sees your IP address as part of serving them, exactly as it would if you visited their website. They set no cookies. Hosting

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes the technical details of each request, including your IP address, to deliver the pages and protect the site from abuse.

Fonts

The three typefaces are served from this site rather than from Google Fonts or any other font service, so simply reading a page tells nobody anything.

What this site does not do

• No advertising of any kind, so no ad network sees your visit.
• No advertising or cross site tracking cookies.
• No social media buttons or embedded trackers.
• No profiling, and no automated decisions about you.
• No selling, sharing or trading of any information, ever.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask for a copy of what is held about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, object to how it is used, or withdraw consent you have given. Email info@craftedcompass.co.uk and it will be dealt with promptly.

Worth saying plainly: for analytics there is nothing to look up. Neither service records anything that could identify you to us, so a request for a copy of your analytics data can only honestly be answered with "there is none". The contact form is different, and if you have sent a message we can find it and delete it.

If you think we have handled something badly and we have not put it right, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office atico.org.uk.

Changes to this page

If the site starts doing something new with data, this page changes before it does, and the date at the top changes with it. If the change needs your permission, the banner will ask again rather than assume your last answer still covers it.
